
The Elephant Man is based on the life of John Merrick who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A Victorian surgeon rescues this heavily disfigured man who is mistreated while scraping a living as a sideshow
freak. Behind his monstrous façade there is revealed a person of kindness, intelligence and sophistication. This play won the Tony Award for best play in 1979.
